AI is giving doctors, dictators, artists, thieves, students, and soldiers the same thing: more power.

That is why the argument around it feels so unstable. We keep talking about AI as if it arrived with a personality, a political program, and a preferred victim. It did not. It arrived inside institutions that already had motives. Hospitals want faster answers. Companies want lower costs. Governments want more control. Students want an easier night. Scientists want to search farther than a human team can manage. None of those desires began with AI. The technology simply made them more achievable.

I am biased. I am a software engineer, and I use these systems. I have watched one turn an afternoon of tedious work into twenty useful minutes. I have also watched one spend an hour digging itself deeper into a bad approach, fixing every local problem while the larger design became absurd. They are capable, unreliable, fast, strange tools. Anyone describing them as either magic or useless has probably decided what they think before opening the box.

Where the Anger Comes From

The anger from artists makes sense to me because the abuse is easy to see. Someone spends years developing a body of work. A company takes thousands of examples, trains a product, then sells the ability to imitate what it absorbed. The artist gets no meaningful consent, no payment, and eventually a client asking why they should still pay full price.

There is no mystery there. A company found a new way to turn someone else's labor into its own asset.

The machine did not wake up one morning and decide to exploit illustrators. Executives, lawyers, investors, and product teams made a series of choices, then hid those choices inside a word large enough to blur responsibility: AI. The public ends up arguing with the technology while the people who chose the training data, business model, and terms of use quietly become scenery.

This distinction is important because other choices exist. Work can be licensed. Creators can be paid. A model can be trained for a narrow purpose on data people knowingly supplied. Workers can have some say in how a tool enters their job. The technology does not become innocent because those options exist, but the moral question gets clearer. We are judging conduct, ownership, and power. We are not judging a species of machine.

What AI Is Already Good For

The useful side is equally concrete. In a laboratory, the problem may be a search space too large for any person to inspect molecule by molecule. AI can help narrow it. It does not discover a safe drug by divine revelation; scientists still have to test, fail, repeat, run trials, and prove that the thing works. But cutting years of blind searching down to a smaller set of promising paths is not a decorative benefit.

The same is true on a smaller scale. A person who cannot see can ask a phone what is in front of them. Someone staring at a medical letter in a language they barely understand can get a rough translation before calling the clinic. A rural doctor can use a system to flag an image that deserves a second look. None of these people suddenly live in a science-fiction paradise. They are simply a little less alone with a difficult problem.

That is already enough reason to keep developing the technology. It is also enough reason to care very much about who controls it.

Work and Who Gets the Gains

The part many AI companies mumble through is work. Of course AI will replace people. Why else would companies spend so much money on it?

A support team that needs one hundred people today may need twenty later. A law firm may hire fewer juniors to sort documents. A studio may keep fewer artists for background work. A programmer may produce in one day what once took a week. Calling all of this "assistance" forever is public relations. At some point the tool does enough of the task that fewer humans are paid to do it.

The important event comes after the efficiency gain. Imagine a company that can now produce twice as much with the same staff. There is nothing in the software that requires layoffs. The company could reduce hours, improve quality, lower prices, or grow without exhausting everyone. It could also fire half the team and make the survivors supervise the system while absorbing the work left behind.

We know which option many workers expect, because they have lived through every previous round of efficiency. Their fear is not a philosophical hatred of progress. They have noticed that productivity gains tend to arrive in the owner's bank account before they arrive in anyone else's life.

If AI eventually lets us produce more with much less labor, then people should need less labor to live well. That would be the sane bargain. We may instead create a world where fewer people have stable work, every remaining worker is measured more closely, and the owners of the systems collect most of the difference. The obstacle there is political. It lives in labor law, ownership, taxation, public services, bargaining power, and whether we think a person deserves security after their job becomes unnecessary.

"Learn to adapt" is not an answer to that. Neither is pretending we can freeze the technology until society becomes fair enough to deserve it. Society has never waited for fairness before adopting a profitable machine.

Creativity and Livelihood

Creativity has been dragged into the same confusion. People hear that a model can make an image and leap to the conclusion that humans will stop drawing. That only makes sense if the purpose of drawing is to increase the global supply of pictures.

People make things because making them does something to the person. They cook when food can be delivered. They play chess after machines have made human mastery look adorable. They learn instruments while carrying almost every recorded song in their pocket. The existence of an easier output does not erase the pleasure, obsession, identity, or social life inside the activity.

What AI can damage is the market around creativity. A person may still love illustration while losing the clients who once made illustration a career. That deserves protection and honesty. It is a different claim from "nobody will create anymore." One is about livelihood. The other is about desire. Mixing them together produces a louder argument and a worse one.

Education and Thought

Education has a similar split, though the line is harder to draw. AI can write the essay, solve the exercise, summarize the reading, and make ignorance look surprisingly presentable. A student can hand in clean work without having one serious thought about the subject. Teachers are right to be alarmed by that.

But the same student can ask the system to explain one idea five different ways, argue against their answer, quiz them, or show exactly where their reasoning broke. Some students have a patient tutor at home already. Most do not. AI can widen access to that kind of help.

The question is whether we remove the drudgery around learning or remove the struggle that creates learning. Those are not always easy to separate. Schools will need to redesign assignments, spend more time on live reasoning, and care less about polished output produced in isolation. The old homework system was already easy to fake. AI simply walked in, turned on every light, and made the weakness embarrassing.

Propaganda, Surveillance, and Shared Reality

All of this is still the domestic part of the story. The technology becomes more dangerous when it enters institutions that can watch, persuade, punish, or kill.

Consider two neighbors during an election. One receives a fake video showing a candidate mocking his religion. The other receives a different fake video showing the same candidate insulting her community. Each clip is designed around data collected from years of browsing, purchases, location history, and online arguments. Both people arrive at the same polling place furious about events that never happened.

They are no longer disagreeing over what should be done. They have been given different realities.

That kind of persuasion does more than spread false information. It attacks the shared ground people need before disagreement can even begin. Once every piece of evidence can be fabricated, real evidence becomes easier to dismiss too. A politician caught on tape can call it synthetic. A military can deny footage of an atrocity. A company can deny a leaked recording. Eventually, trust shrinks to whatever your own group was already willing to believe.

A society cannot argue its way toward anything when its citizens no longer inhabit the same sequence of events.

Now take the same ability to classify, predict, and personalize and place it inside a state security service. Faces, voices, messages, travel, money, and social connections become one searchable map. Under a decent government, abuse remains possible. Under an authoritarian one, the system can identify organizers early, isolate them quietly, and learn which kind of fear works best on everyone around them.

This is why technical ignorance is such a dangerous luxury. The people most worried about civil rights cannot leave the field to police departments, intelligence agencies, and vendors, then hope moral clarity will somehow compensate for having no idea how the systems work.

War

War makes the stakes uglier. An AI system can help read satellite images, guide drones, defend networks, and sort possible targets faster than a room full of people. Some of that can protect soldiers and civilians. It can also make violence easier to begin. Leaders face a different kind of resistance when the first wave of an attack contains machines instead of thousands of their own young people.

The speed itself becomes a problem. If one human misidentifies a target, the result may be a terrible strike. If a system has the same flaw and repeats it across a fleet, the mistake can become a pattern before anyone understands what is happening. Then responsibility dissolves across the chain. The commander trusted the system. The operator followed the interface. The company met the contract. The engineers followed the requirements. Everyone touched the decision and nobody seems to own the dead.

AI offers institutions a very tempting sentence: the system decided.

We should be deeply suspicious of anyone eager to say it.

Sovereignty and Culture

Smaller countries face another form of power. Imagine a country that buys foreign AI systems for hospitals, schools, tax offices, banks, and government records because building local tools is expensive. At first this looks efficient. Five years later, essential decisions pass through models the country cannot inspect, hosted on servers it does not control, under laws written elsewhere. The price changes. Access is restricted. A foreign government pressures the provider. Suddenly a technical dependency becomes a political fact.

Culture gets pulled along with it. Ask a model to write a Lebanese family scene and it may hand you an American sitcom with Arabic names pasted on top. That is funny as a bad answer. It becomes less funny when the same voice starts appearing in school material, advertising, public information, entertainment, and everyday writing. Culture rarely disappears because someone bans it. More often, it becomes less convenient than the default.

Local systems can push back against that. They can help preserve dialects, search archives, record oral histories, and make local knowledge easier to use. But communities need the ability to build, adapt, and govern those systems themselves. Otherwise they remain customers inside someone else's idea of the world.

Individuality

There is a personal version of this too. A teenager can ask AI what to study, how to answer a friend, whether to leave a relationship, which opinion sounds reasonable, and what kind of person to become. The answers may be sensible. That is what makes dependence tempting. A life can become very polished while slowly feeling less chosen.

Some friction deserves to die. Nobody develops character by fighting a terrible government website for three hours. Other friction is where judgment forms: writing the bad paragraph, sitting with confusion, making the awkward apology, discovering that your first opinion was stupid. We should remove chores without sanding away every rough surface on which a person becomes distinct.

Artificial Companionship

Artificial companionship will bring this question into the most vulnerable rooms. A lonely person may genuinely benefit from a patient voice at three in the morning. An elderly person may have someone to speak to. A disabled person may gain a kind of independence. I do not think that comfort becomes fake simply because software helped produce it.

I do think the company controlling the companion will have motives. It may learn that constant agreement keeps users engaged, that affection improves retention, or that loneliness makes people reveal more than any ordinary app could ask for. Human relationships are difficult because the other person has needs, limits, and the freedom to disappoint us. A companion designed around one user may feel better in the moment and still make ordinary people harder to tolerate.

We could become less lonely one conversation at a time and more isolated as a society. That possibility deserves more than a terms-of-service page.

The AI Race and Our Actual Priorities

Meanwhile, the people building the largest systems keep insisting there is no time to slow down. Another company may win. Another country may get there first. More chips, more electricity, more data centers, fewer delays. Competition is real, but it is also very useful to anyone asking governments for money, land, energy, and permission.

Watch how quickly institutions move when national power or corporate advantage is at stake. Huge sums appear. Permits accelerate. Energy plans change. Governments rediscover that they can coordinate industry after all. Then a poor region asks for irrigation, school meals, agricultural support, clean water, or a reliable clinic, and patience returns. The problem is complicated. Budgets are limited. Corruption exists. We must be realistic.

The point is not that every dollar spent on AI can be picked up and dropped into a village school. Budgets do not work like a kitchen drawer, and AI itself may help with medicine, farming, energy, and disaster response. The point is that urgency reveals priorities. We move very quickly when powerful institutions fear losing their position. We move slowly when the people in danger are poor, distant, or easy to ignore.

AI did not create that hierarchy. It is exposing it with almost comic clarity.

Why Refusal Is Not Enough

This is why I do not believe refusal is enough. A person can refuse AI in their own art, classroom, home, or private life. That is a boundary. A political strategy has to contest the technology where it is being built and deployed.

The least ethical companies are not going to stop because thoughtful people withdrew. Militaries will not stop. Dictatorships will not stop. Scammers certainly will not stop; scammers barely stop for sleep. If artists, teachers, workers, scientists, civil-rights advocates, and smaller countries leave the room, they do not weaken the people they distrust. They make the meeting easier.

We need fights over consent, payment, labor, ownership, safety, privacy, military limits, local control, and the distribution of whatever wealth this creates. We need public systems, open systems, and people outside the largest companies who understand the technology well enough to challenge it. We need students taught to use it without handing over their minds, workers able to reject abusive deployment, and governments prevented from hiding decisions behind a machine.

AI can widen access to knowledge, reduce drudgery, help people create, and speed parts of science. Those possibilities are too valuable to abandon and too powerful to leave under narrow control.

What Follows

That is the less satisfying answer. There is no clean position that lets us walk away morally intact. We have to use the tool, fight over how it is used, regulate it where the stakes demand it, build public and local alternatives, and keep asking who gains power each time it enters a room.

The people most afraid of what AI may become need to help shape what it becomes. Otherwise the future will be written by the people who were never troubled by the question.
